SJC 60th Anniversary Organising Committee donates $215,000

FRIDAY 1st OCT - The 60th Jubilee Organising Committee of Saint Joseph’s College is donating $215,000 today as net proceeds realised from its recent anniversary celebration.

As the general public is aware SJC celebrated 60th years since it was established in Samoa from the 27th to the 29th of August this year. Festivities commenced with a Holy Mass on Friday 27th August at the Mulivai Cathedral and followed by a march pass which ended infront of the Government Building at Matagialalua to hear the Prime Minister’s address.

In the afternoon of the same day all Houses (Team Alfred, Team Darnard, Team Dieter and Team Marcellin) battle on the filed for the first part of the sports day events such as Touch Rugby, Soccer and Netball.

The Royal Ava Ceremony was followed at the Alafua Fale Samoa in honour of the head of state, His Highness Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi, who is an old pupil of Saint Joseph’s College and was followed by a cocktail reception to welcome all Old Pupils of SJC.

On Saturday 28th August, the day started with the Fautasi Race which was won by Team Darnard. The Radiothon was held on the same date featuring 2AP and TalofaFM for the first time to raise funds for Saint Joseph’s College. The day ended with a Social and Prize giving where Team Dieter claimed the overall winner for Sports Event, second by Team Darnard, third Team Alfred and Marcellin in fourth place.

Team Dieter will now defend its title in the next celebration in 2020.

According to informed sources, a special celebration marking 125 years since the Marist Brothers arrived in Samoa in 1888 is in the preliminary planning stages but will held in Apia in 2013. About two years after that in 2015, Saint Joseph’s College will celebrate its 65 years since its establishment and this has been approved by the recent contingent of Old Pupils from Pago Pago to be held in American Samoa.

In any event the presentation of cheques this afternoon to the recipients of the 60th Anniversary net proceeds are as follows;
1. Marist Trust Board - $200,000
2. Little Sisters of the Poor at Mapuifagalele- $5000
3. Marist Brother’s Old Boys Association Inc - $10,000
Total - $215,000

In his final remarks at the Presentation Ceremony, Mr. Mataia Vensel Margraff, Acting Chairman of the Organising Committee, former President of the Marist Old Boys Association Inc., thanked the Government, the General Public, the Business Community, Corporations and various Organisations as well as individuals including all Old Pupils who contributed generously and which no doubt ensured the success of this milestone event.

A vote of appreciation and gratitude was also extended to the local Media for the wide coverage and increased awareness of the Jubilee events last month. Appreciation was also acknowledged for the contribution of the Organising Committee which comprised of the Marist Brothers Community, SJC PTA and the Old Boys and Girls of Saint Joseph’s College.
